Ed Gibson

With the 40th anniversary of Skylab, Farthest Reaches is pleased to offer artifacts for sale from the personal collection of Astronaut Edward Gibson.  Ed flew on the Skylab III manned mission in 1973 and was the co-holder of the space endurance record for 18 years. Having joined the program in 1965, Ed has been able to acquire a number of space related mementos spanning all of his NASA years.  To that end, he has entrusted Farthest Reaches to make available to collectors worldwide, selected items from his collection that will be posted below as they become available.  We invite you to stop back from time to time as you just never know what unique treasures may suddenly appear.

from the personal collection of Ed Gibson

Menu 1 & 2
SOLD

Menu 3 & 4
SOLD

Menu 5 & 6
Last one available

Offered here are the flown mission used menus from the flight of Skylab 1 (Conrad, Kerwin and Weitz).  They were removed from space station at the conclusion of Skylab III by Science Pilot Ed Gibson. thereby saving them from certain destruction.  As you can see, they are most interesting and exceptionally readable with each day's meals broken down for the individual crew members.

Each heavy duty card measures and has Velcro tabs on the top corners to prevent them from floating away.  The cards are double sided with a different menu printed on each side.  There were a total of 6 menus for each crew that spanned the duration of that mission.

These menu cue cards are in outstanding condition and come with individual COA's establishing their history and providing flight certification.  In addition, Ed Gibson has hand signed on side of each cue card, with mission information added.  Each card can be further annotated at the buyers request.

Metal backed "Snoopy" decal FLOWN on Skylab III
from the personal collection of Ed Gibson

As featured in the May 18, 2013 Financial Times: "Travel Unraveled" Supplement

Charles Schultz creator of the Peanuts cartoon strip, permitted the use of the Snoopy character on Skylab metal backed decals used to identify personal crew items.  The Science Pilot's (Ed Gibson) items were labeled with white decals while his fellow crewmates used red and blue.  They were launched on Skylab I for later use by the Skylab 3 crew.

The decals were attached to the crew's tissue dispensers, pantry drawers and most other personal items.  As their mission came to an end, the Skylab III crew peeled off the decals that hadn't come loose along with those unused decals that remained and brought them home with them.

Each of Ed's decals is Flight Certified, numbered and affixed to be easily removed if desired onto a hand signed COA that fully details their history and provenance. There are only 12 of the 34 total decals available for sale to collectors at this time with the others being retained by the Gibson family.

These Snoopy decals traveled 111 million miles in space during their 270 day flight from launch day on May 14, 1973.  It is a most unusual item and would surely make a great addition to any space memorabilia collection.
